"The Great Battle of the Invisible Cat"
—Inspired by Caron Cecilia

F’Lel ran through the forest at a heightened paced.  He realized time was running short until the window of opportunity for the prophecy to arise disappeared.  Bucnar told him to meet him in the distant land of Kräg, which was at least another twenty or so hours of travel time.  He needed to cross the Staln Forest before he reached the mountains of Creat, where Kräg lay in a valley: the land of the giants.  A perilous journey that required large amounts of skill and training, two things F’Lel lacked, but he had his hammer, the hammer that chose him to be its champion: The One of Earth, at least that was what Bucnar informed him.

But what if he was a lier?

Nevertheless, F’Lel trekked on, brushing through the forest at a swift pace.  He avoided the ominous creatures and killed what he found edible, finding useful items along the way, including the hide of an armadillo he ate, which he used as a helmet, his prize from his great battle with the grizzly and her cubs, a fur vest, bracers and moccasins.  He also raided a beaver damn, took the pre-made wood, and made a quiver of arrows after slaying the mighty beast, who used his wood as spears.

None of those battles, however, prepared him for what lay at the end of the forest.  Legend had it that a ferocious cat who could camouflage itself into the forest roamed between the edge of Staln Forest and the mountains.  If F’Lel could defeat it, he would take its teeth as a prize and make a necklace out of them, which would undoubtedly bring him strength in the battles ahead.

If only he found a way to convince his mentor, Talur, to join him in his journey, the quest wouldn’t be as perilous.  He probably would be able to if he wanted, but his travels led him too far to turn back, so he pressed on.

After three hours and thirteen minutes, he finally reached the edge of the forest.  He slowed his pace as he trudged through the assortment of ferns and rocks.  He almost saw something move in the bushes, but figured it to be his imagination playing tricks again.  He periodically had false alarms of the beast approaching, finding nothing but rabid rabbits and rats.  Most times, he’d simply walk away from such pointless quarrelling, but if he needed the practice—or food—he would slay the pitiful creatures and cook himself a stew.

This time, however, it did not appear to be a false alarm, as his hammer illuminated in a mighty blue flare, lighting the area all around the warrior.  This happened twice before, when he battled the beaver and the bear posse.  There, not even ten yards in front of F’Lel, stood the invisible cat.  “Prepare yourself, beast!” he roared as he unsheathed his short sword and hammer.  After pondering the idea for a moment, he placed his sword and hammer away and retrieved his bow and quiver of arrows.

The beast remained still.

F’Lel’s aim was sharp and true.  The arrow pierced the cat in the buttocks, forcing it to cry in agony.  Then it sprung forward and slashed him on the cheek, its jagged claws burying deep in his skin.  This did not bode well for the warrior.  The blood flowed out of his body too quickly.  How could he be The One of Earth if he would be fallen by a mere cat?

He remembered Bucnar’s words to him when they met in the cave, for whenever he ran into trouble.  “Show you, the hammer will.  To me, you call.  To you, I will come.”  In a fit of panic, F’Lel pulled out his great hammer and pumped it to the sky to summon the giant, Bucnar.  The ground shook rhythmically as the warrior and the beast felt the footsteps of the monumental—

“Goddamnit, Justin!  It’s been four hours since you’ve been on that thing!  It’s time you turned it off.”

“But mom, I’m at the boss level!  I just used my summon, Bucnar, to crush the Tiger of Staln so I could reach Creat mountain!”

“I don’t care what kind of butts of the Tiger you’re stalling with.  You’ve got school tomorrow!  And you haven’t even started your homework yet!  Off.  Now!”

“Come on, mom!  I’m almost to the save point!  Lemme just get to the save point, then I’ll turn it off.  Please?

“Fine.  Save point.  Then you gotta get your homework done.  You’ve already skipped dinner.  You’re lucky your father’s working late.  You know he wouldn’t allow this.”

Justin mumbled under his breath.  “You’re lucky your father’s working late…blah blah blah.”

F’Lel stood over the fallen monster as its champion, retrieving his bounty: the Tiger Necklace, and continued down the path to Creat.  While walking, he found a bright light ahead of him.  He sprinted to the light and gazed into its hypnotizing glow.  He slowly reached for his hammer and pressed the tip to the light.  The light exploded into a fury of blues and yellows, revealing a small fairy.

The fairy looked at the warrior and smiled.  “And what do you wish of me, young F’Lel?”

F’Lel kneeled down and bowed his head to the fairy.  “I wish to save.”

“Are you done yet, Justin?”

No, mom!  I almost got to the save point, then realized that I have to keep going until I reach disc two.  Then I get to play as The One of Fire.  She’s awesome.  She has a dragon as a summon!”

“I don’t give a damn if she has a Barack Obama as a summon!  That’s not the most important thing in the world!”  She pointed at him.  “This One’s behind’s gonna feel like fire if your father gets home and you’re still on this game!”

“Ten more minutes, then I’m done.  I swear!”

“You better be,” she said, leaving the room.

You better be,” he mumbled.
Ok...I think I might've gotten carried away with this one. But it was a lot more fun than I thought it'd be.

So...to get everyone up to speed:
Me and :iconcaroncecilia: decided to collaborate and enter The Copycat Competition together. She used my story "Gambling in the Alley" as an influence (I'm assuming, but she might've scrapped that one, I hope not), and I used the novel that's she's working on as a reference. A few chapters from her one of her parts (there's four) can be found here: [link]

I happen to be sifting through her part with a character, F'Lel, who is The One of Earth. I took my influences from that. Now all these characters are hers and are by no means my creation. Everything I mention in italics are actual things that happen in her novel (except for the beaver and bear posse, lol).

Anyway...have fun reading this one. I had a blast writing it. And any critique is good critique, in my opinion. I want to make it the best it can be by the 30th...so go ahead and butcher it, if you feel like it.

1,000 words.

Lub you, Caron...

Two pieces to check out of hers (which I highly suggest you do):

Haha! That was delicious fun. I love the loose, carefree style of the "game" passages. Even the spelling errors, intentional or not, add to the punch! Lots of standout lines... you've effectively made it sound like a ridiculous game.

I suppose you could turn that into the "point" of the story, though somehow I doubt that would satisfy you =P It's more fun if it's just for fun, as they say!

Anyway, it sounds like you enjoyed writing this, and I really enjoyed reading it =)
